PAINTING THE INTERIOR (OPTIONAL)

12. Before proceeding further, decide whether you will be painting the inside of your doghouse. If so, begin now while you have easy access to the interior. Use an exterior latex paint.

SECURING THE PLYWOOD WALLS

13. Screw or nail the plywood sides to the framing, being sure your hardware goes into the studs. If you miss a stud, retract the screw or nail and adjust the location.

14. The front piece should cover the edges of the plywood sides. Measure the height from the top edge of the front top plate to the bottom of the 2 × 4 platform box.

Once the front has been cut, mark for the door opening. Hold the plywood front in place, and on the inside surface, draw a pencil line along the inside of the door studs, bottom plate, and header. A more accurate method is to mark off the precise dimensions on the face of the plywood. Remember that there will be a 55/8-inch lip below the doorway to enclose the bottom plate, floor, and floor support system.

With an electric drill and 1-inch bit, drill holes in each of the four corners. Connect the holes with the jigsaw. Smooth the edges with sandpaper if necessary.

Paint the inside surface of the plywood (if desired) before nailing or screwing it into the studs. Remember to secure it to the door studs and header.

15. The width of the back wall should be measured from outside face to outside face of the sidewalls, and from the top edge of the top plate to the bottom of the raised platform.

Cut out the shape with a circular saw and screw the wall into the corner studs, top plate, and platform box.
